I have traversed this grandest of Berlin’s lakes a thousand times, if I were counting. It has almost 7km of lakeshore which can be walked or done by bike. I know all of it contours – I have memorized all the bends in the paths along its shore . I have come to know the lake when it is quiet, without visitors, calm and peaceful. It can also be noisy and full of groups of frolicking teens. I know the sensation of its cool water, on summer nights, that is so welcoming against my skin, and in the fall when it becomes cooler, it marks the coming of fall. You can rent a boat or a stand-up paddleboard. The lake has several beergardens along its route as well as several fancy restaurants. The nearby but quiet hidden cafe Haus am Waldsee offers the truest sense of distance style lounging – with a large outdoor space with many statues scattered across its large lawn. You can visit the current exhibit and tank up with a coffee and cake before you leave. Schlachtensee is an the S-Bahn line S1 which will take you back to the city.
